Seminar Pre Write
In the book "Mexican White Boy" The main character Danny and his best friend Uno wear many masks throughout the book. There are many events in this book that where negative and caused weakness and sadness. Uno shows his weakness by being mean and aggressive and tough. Danny is different. Danny stays quiet and keeps troubles to himself. He doesn't like to cause big scenes. Uno thinks he has to always set standards for his parents. Both guys have been socialized in different ways.
This book has a lot of the concept socialization in it. When I think of this book I think of the "Man Box." This box refers to how men are socialized. It shows the ways guys have different standards and expectations. Examples of this would be, strong, tough, not showing emotions, being strong, being fit, and getting woman. I think both of these guys really feel like they need to live up to these standards and they need to do all of these things to fit in. Danny feels very out of place at the same time because of his race. Race has a huge effect on socialization. Socialization has a big effect on everyone in the society.
This book also had a lot to do with economic class and race. In this society, Danny got to see what it was like to live in a low class place, where people don't have much money. Danny feels super out of place because he is used to being in a higher class place. I think when he was around people in a low class he didn't feel as much trust and as close to those people around him. Race had a huge effect on Danny to. The fact that Danny is Mexican puts him in a uncomfortable situation and he feels really out of place. Danny's family thinks that Danny is super privileged and that he should be proud that he doesn't fit in. I think this has changed my view of race and economic class a lot.
