As sad as I am to be finishing up my internship, and ending my time at Joy of Life Family Medicine, I am so thankful to have gotten the opportunity to intern with two lovely ladies and an awesome local business helping the community. I have been inspired as a whole not only to support midwives, and home births, but to be as caring and kind to others as my mentors. This week I finished up my ManaStats project, and continued going into clients visits. I attended another birthing class this week, and was able to hear birth stories from individuals, and learn about the process of birth and important and helpful birthing skills. This internship has opened my eyes and helped me see the big picture of how important it is to have a healthy, and happy birthing experience, and how east that is to accomplish with a midwife!
This week I was fully comfortable and confident with what I was doing. Doing ManaStats this week was no big deal, and I could easily enter all the information that was available to me, along with understand pregnancy and birth concepts better. I sat in on more visits this week and was able to experience a little more of the post partum care including listening to the baby, measuring and weighing the baby etc. This week I read a couple articles about the importance of midwifes globally, and I wrote a blog for Joy of Life on their website. This week it occurred to me that the health of the baby really does depend on the mother and her diet plays a huge role on the baby during and after pregnancy. I learned about allergies newborns can have, the dilemma of knowing or not knowing to immunize your child, and the emotional toll pregnancy can have on the mother. This week I felt successful in getting in on clients visits, I think I did atleast one every day. I felt engaged and present during these visits for my benefit and learning. I can't think of any mistakes I made this week! I am still on the same schedule working with Joy and Beka. I have a clearer vision on how I am going to present my information at the exhibition, and ways I can influence the audience. My goals for the upcoming week are to stay fully engaged and gain the most knowledge and experience I can while my internship lasts!
Week one is complete! There is so much I have experienced this week that I didn't expect to! Through home visits, client visits, and my Mana Stats project, I was able to grasp concepts about home births and caring for a pregnant women/a women who has already gone through labor and had a child. Mana Stats took up most of my week this week. I have been busy learning about the pregnancy process, labor process, and post part process by entering clients data throughout all of their pregnancy. This week I have been able to bond with my mentors, and have fun while still learning a ton! The only struggle I have ran into this week was making sure that all of the data I entered into Mana Stats was correct, and that I didn't miss any blanks. Overall, this week was awesome!
Wow! Day 1 is complete. Today I was so fortunate to get the experiences I did. I was overwhelmed by how much I was able to learn on just the first day! Today I received clients charts and was able to look through them and view their entire pregnancy and labor and all the details that came with it. I began to enter the information into ManaStats and learn through the process of questions and unknown words and topics that came up throughout the process. The biggest part of my day today and the most exciting was going to a 24 hour post part home visit! At this visit I was able to interact with the mother and her newborn and help my mentor with small tasks she needed to make the visit successful. I also watched more videos about midwifery and the special process of home births. I am falling in love with my internship and mentors already!
